Can an emotion affect a space, just as a space has the power to influence our emotions?
In her first short film, Camille looks at how the turbulent social climate has quietly invaded our homes. The inflow is so powerful, it puts enormous pressure on our private lives and relationships. The upheavals outside have gradually been transformed into inner turmoil. What will be left after the storm has passed?
N. /spās/. From Latin spatium.
An environment conducive to creative expression.
The crux of Open Season. The creative spark in the early days, the anchor during moments of doubt, the North Star guiding the journey.
Spaces and emotions are two facets of the same language; it is by interacting that they take shape.
N. /ˈwindō/. From Old Norse vindauga, vindr (wind) + auga (eye).
An opening to the outside.
The setting breaks free of its four walls. It can transcend the enclosed space to connect with its context.
The window reveals just enough to allow the imagination to feed on what it cannot see.
Excl. [fək ət]. From Dutch fokken (to breed), and Old English hit.
Giving yourself permission to screw up.
It is looking the failure straight in the eye and finding what nobody else could see.
“After three weeks of effort, it wasn’t working. There was no emotion; what LE LAB allowed me to do was to simply say fuck it, we’re starting over!”
N. /ˈärdəst/. From Latin ars, artis (art).
A person who uses a technique to convey an emotion.
The desire to create an emotional connection with the audience is really what drives creativity; the technique is simply the vehicle.
Without the artist there is no emotion, no technique, no film, no creativity.
N. /ˈmālˌsträm/. From Dutch malen (to grind), and strom (stream).
A powerful whirlpool.
A violent storm of emotions that engulfs everything it comes into contact with. At its core, the maelstrom has no oxygen, no bearings, no anchors.
They nearly drowned in a maelstrom. Water is life, but it can also bring destruction.
Adj. /ˈlimənl/. From Latin limen, -inis (seuil).
On the threshold of imperceptibility.
At the height of the storm, we can no longer tell up from down, separate the rational from the absurd, or identify the true source of our fear.
The liminal spaces are where the frameworks break apart.
N. /ōpən ˈsēzən/. From Old, and Middle English ūp sesoun.
A period when all restrictions are lifted, abandoned or ignored.
A year of civil war, when people can attack one another with guns just as well as keyboards. It’s open season. And it extends right into our homes.
Trump has free rein, our grandparents are dropping like flies and a humpback whale got lost and died in Montréal. It’s Open Season.
N. /id/. From Latin it.
Innate instinctive impulses.
The pent-up energy emitted by the id can be so strong that it breaks through the filter of the superego to manifest as Freudian slips.
“Making the film allowed me to externalize what I had been feeling over the past year, but in a totally unconscious way. The story evolved at the same time as I was evolving in the pandemic and it was only at the very end of the process that the id became clear to me.”
V. /krē-ˈāt/. From Latin creātus (give birth to).
Bring into existence.
Create an image, create a space where dreams come true, create a vehicle for self-expression.
“Making this film allowed me to take back control of my creativity and express myself through my own ideas.”
